I have had a lot of small business owners ask me, “Why do I need to have my business on Facebook? Who even goes on Facebook anyway?” My initial reaction is usually, “If you don’t know who goes on Facebook, you obviously are not on Facebook!” But I can see where they are coming from. After all, we don’t know what we don’t know!
In order to answer these questions I think we first need to understand why Social Media Marketing has become so popular. We are constantly being bombarded with a multitude of attempts to get our attention. We want to be able to control these interruptions.
- Emails from businesses we don’t know or trust.
- Pop-ups advertisements that appear on our screen while we are surfing the web.
To combat these online interruptions we have implemented SPAM filters and pop-up blockers.
- Calls from telemarketers.
- Commercials during our favorite television show or on the radio.
We control these offline interruptions by adding our names to the do-not-call registry, we use DVR’s to skip commercials, and we change the station if an ad interrupts our music listening.
Consumers want to be informed about products and services; however they want to be able to control where they receive their information from. They also want to be able to trust the information they receive. Nobody wants to make a “bad purchase” or receive “poor service”.
Digital “word-of-mouse marketing” is considered among the most trusted forms of information sharing. Below is a list of some of the more commonly known social media outlets:
People share their good and bad experiences with their friends and families. As consumers we want to know what works and who to avoid. It is better to have more information rather than not enough.
So, the question for you is:
“Are you still interrupting your potential client or are you informing them in a non-threatening manner?”
