Stop Pitching and Start Connecting

June 30, 2011 By ShellyCedarblade Leave a Comment

This is what youth athletics should be all about! Sportsmanship, character development, a time for learning the fundamentals of the game, having fun with teammates, and getting together with other families to cheer on the team.

Unfortunately, more often than not, it is competitive and ruthless.  I am not talking about the young athletes; I’m talking about the parents!  This past week it became evident to me that the parents are more concerned about winning than the athletes.  To illustrate, our softball team has 26 girls which is too many for one team.  We divided the girls up into two teams.  This works out great, except when we have to play against each other.  You should have heard the bickering amongst the parents.

If you know me, I am super competitive.  I love to play games and I love to win.  However, as I get older I really am realizing that playing a game is about giving a 100% effort, having fun, and the camaraderie of being part of a team!  It’s not about winning, or losing.  It’s about the relationships that are deepened on and off the field!

This relates to social media in the sense that many small businesses are constantly “pitching” their products and services.  They still think it is about them…trying to win!  It is not about what they want, but what their clients and customers want.  Social networking is about connecting, developing relationships, and helping others out.  Similar to the way a team should work together.

When you want to promote your business for the fifth time in a week trying to sell on Facebook; remember, it is not about the “win” or “making the sale”; it’s about providing value.  If you provide value and develop trust, the sale will come!

If you are wondering how to connect with your clients and customers, you may want to consider using the services of a social media consultant such as myself. If you mention this blog post, I will provide a free social media evaluation for you.  Contact me, I would love to help!

10 Social Media Metrics

The proof is in the numbers.  I came across this blog article written by Jeff Esposito, “96 Percent of Americans Use Facebook — and Other Social Media Stats for the C-Suite” in Social Media Today.  Here is what he sited regarding Social Media:

  1. 82% of 18-29 year olds utilize a form of social networking (Pew)
  2. 48%  of consumers combine social media and search engines in their buying process (GroupM)
  3. 24%  of adults have posted a review of a product they have purchased (HubSpot)
  4. One out of every six minutes spent online is on a social network (comScore)
  5. 46 million Americans check their social media profiles daily (Edison Research)
  6. In 2011, marketers will increase their social media usage by 75%  (Brian Solis)
  7. 89% of companies note that social media will become a useful piece in their marketing mix moving forward (Useful Social Media)
  8. 35% of small businesses utilize social media in their marketing mix (eMarketer)
  9. 41% of the companies report that there is no staff dedicated to social media (Useful Social Media)
  10. 10.5% of CMOs say social marketing efforts are effectively integrated into their overall marketing strategy (MarketingProfs)

Metrics 6 – 10 indicate that there is a strong need for social media marketing assistance.  Whether you are just getting started or have been using social media for awhile, I can help you!

Five Reasons Why You May Need a Social Media Manager!

June 8, 2011 By ShellyCedarblade Leave a Comment

Social Media Managers help businesses connect with their clients and customers!  They take the social media hype and make it manageable and understandable.  They help clients stay focused on the daily operation of their business while they take care of the tedious work of running an effective social media campaign.  To learn more about what a Social Media Manager does, read below…

Five Reasons Why You May Need a Social Media Manager!

  1. Develop Systems ~ Managing social media campaigns can be very time consuming if you do not have a system to effectively manage your efforts.  A Social Media Manager will sit down with each client and help them develop systems that will work for them.
  2. Status Updates ~ Many businesses do not know what type of content to share with their followers.   Social Media Managers will post pre-approved status updates for their clients.  This content is researched via blogs and articles that pertain to their client’s business niche.  This is often where businesses become overwhelmed.  A Social Media Manager will do all the research so their client can maintain their business.
  3. Application Investigation ~ The age of technology is constantly changing and it can be difficult to keep up with the latest tools that can help you with your social media success.  A Social Media Manager will investigate the latest tools available and apply them to the related social media outlets.
  4. Clean Up ~ Social Media Managers are available to clean client’s inbox or messages that they may have received on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn.  Often the inbox can get cluttered with useless information, so they clean it up for their client.  They only leave the important messages. There are programs that can also be applied to simplify this procedure, but it is best to have a human eye determine what is SPAM and what may be important information.
  5. Determine the Best Platforms ~ A Social Media Manger will research the best platforms to connect with clients or customers.  The fast paced client may enjoy Twitter, but may be missing potential connections with clients or customers on Facebook or LinkedIn.

Have you found that …

  • you are overwhelmed with all that it takes to be successful marketing your business online?
  • you are too busy to update your status?
  • your clients and customers fail to engage in the conversation?

If you answered yes to one or all of the questions above, you may need a Social Media Manager!  Contact me today to see if I can help!

Why Social Media Marketing?

May 26, 2011 By ShellyCedarblade Leave a Comment

I have had a lot of small business owners ask me, “Why do I need to have my business on Facebook?  Who even goes on Facebook anyway?”  My initial reaction is usually, “If you don’t know who goes on Facebook, you obviously are not on Facebook!”  But I can see where they are coming from.  After all, we don’t know what we don’t know!

In order to answer these questions I think we first need to understand why Social Media Marketing has become so popular. We are constantly being bombarded with a multitude of attempts to get our attention.  We want to be able to control these interruptions.

Online Intrusions:

  • Emails from businesses we don’t know or trust.
  • Pop-ups advertisements that appear on our screen while we are surfing the web.

To combat these online interruptions we have implemented SPAM filters and pop-up blockers.

Offline Intrusions:

  • Calls from telemarketers.
  • Commercials during our favorite television show or on the radio.

We control these offline interruptions by adding our names to the do-not-call registry, we use DVR’s to skip commercials, and we change the station if an ad interrupts our music listening.

Consumers want to be informed about products and services; however they want to be able to control where they receive their information from.  They also want to be able to trust the information they receive.  Nobody wants to make a “bad purchase” or receive “poor service”.

Digital “word-of-mouse marketing” is considered among the most trusted forms of information sharing.  Below is a list of some of the more commonly known social media outlets:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • LinkedIn
  • Flicker
  • YouTube
  • Blogs

People share their good and bad experiences with their friends and families.  As consumers we want to know what works and who to avoid.  It is better to have more information rather than not enough.

So, the question for you is:

“Are you still interrupting your potential client or are you informing them in a non-threatening manner?”

If you need help with your “word-of-mouse” marketing contact me!  I am sure I can help!
